Welcome to the website of St. Mary’s Church, the original cathedral Church of the Diocese of Hamilton.
St. Mary’s Church in Hamilton, Ontario, has a rich history dating back to 1838 when the original wooden structure was built. Despite being destroyed by fire in 1859, the cathedral was rebuilt the following year through the collaborative efforts of Bishop John Farrell and the local community. The current cathedral, completed in 1860, stands as a testament to the dedication and faith of its builders. With its Victorian Gothic Revival architecture, St. Mary’s has retained much of its original appearance and is considered a prime example of period interior decoration in Ontario. Recently refurbished, the cathedral houses numerous artistic treasures and serves as a welcoming home for immigrants to Canada, reflecting the diversity and harmony of its parish community. Recognized as an Ontario History and Heritage Site, St. Mary’s Church continues to be a cherished landmark in the region.
Since its construction, St. Mary’s has welcomed and served successive groups of immigrants to this region of Canada. Many of today’s residents can trace their first ancestors in Canada back to St. Mary’s and its North End neighbourhoods. St. Mary’s was and continues to be a “first home” to new immigrant groups until they are able to establish parishes and communities reflecting their heritage. Today, St. Mary’s Parish consists of both a vibrant Portuguese community and an English speaking community from numerous origins and backgrounds. The wonderfully diverse Parish of today is a splendid and enriching example of harmony, peace and mutual respect for all.
St. Mary’s is officially recognized as an Ontario History and Heritage Site by the Government of Ontario.
Clergy and Staff
Father Luis Inacio, Pastor
Father Luis Inacio was born in 1964 in Feteiras, Ponta Delgada Azores – Portugal, the youngest of seven children and grew up on St. Miguel, Azores. While studying in Secondary School in Ponte Delegada he studied music, piano and trumpet. He completed his university education in Porto and Lisbon, Portugual and subsequently taught Moral and Philosphy in Lisbon. During this time, he also was organist and choir director at two parishes.
After arriving in Canada, Father Luis studied in Ottawa at the Dominican College. He completed his seminary formation at Sacred Heart Seminary in Milwaukee and was ordained a transitional Deacon here at Saint Mary's in June 2023. After his Ordination to the Priesthood on July 20, 2024, he served as Associate Pastor of Saint Joseph's Parish in Hamilton before being appointed Pastor of Saint Mary's in June, 2026
